Donte (D. Nebi) Hilliard is a demi-theistic humanist mystic, life coach, erotic wellness guide, performance artist, reiki practitioner and minister who orients to the Pan-African or Africana aesthetic as the thread that connects African people throughout the diaspora. His work explores storytelling practices across the African diaspora with emphasis on Oral traditions, Rituals, Cosmology, Song, Dance, Drumming, and textile art. His work emerges at the nexus of Liturgical Theology, Embodiment, Art making and Social Movements. His most recent project is exploring the relationship between Black, Queer and Humanist Identities and the concepts of Holiness, Worship, Liberation and the Future.
Art is a transformative medium that helps us embrace critical thinking, story-telling, and meaning-making. Artistic expression is a primary way for marginalized communities to thrive in spite of the forces of oppression against them; transforming the energy of pain, trauma and harm into beautiful visions and actions that foster and sustain Black Love, Black Joy, and a transformed world. Let us all imagine, invite, and/or conjure a vision of a world without violence, and then intentionally embody/practice that world via our family, community, organizational and institutional structures; over and over until our present world is replaced by our sacred and embodied vision. This is my prayer and my practice
Donte has been affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association since 2016, and worships in the virtual community of Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism (BLUU). He holds Masters degrees in Black Studies and Religious Studies and is currently a Doctor of Ministry student at Meadville Lombard Theological Seminary.
