I find Kim’s words about friendship, excerpted from a sermon of hers we printed in the February 2011 Quest, very helpful as a roadmap to a meaningful life. My friends as chosen family and my family as chosen friends. —LD

Friend: the one who sees the beauty,
even in the brokenness,
and reflects that to us, like a mirror.
Friend: devotion.
Friend: the one who comes and sits
and remains with us,
even in the face of terrible brokenness,
and helps us to bear it.
Friend: the one who makes the world
a little safer,
the one who carries us when we can’t,
the one who makes us smile.
Friend: to look on all people
as all our relations:
to forgive,
to bear hope,
and to work together
for a world at peace,
a world in love.

Rev. Kim K. Crawford Harvie

senior minister at Arlington St. Church, Boston, MA

Kim, a fourth generation Unitarian Universalist, has served as senior minister at Arlington Street Church for 26 years.  In 2004, she performed the first legal same-sex marriage in a church in the country.  Having raised three daughters in Cambridge, Kim and her wife, Kem Morehead, now live with 29 teenage boys and two giant Shiloh Shepherds at Concord Academy, where Kem teaches math.  In the summers, they move into a two-person tent at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
