We grieve with the families and friends of the Marines killed in Chattanooga, and we pray for the full recovery of those who were injured. We are heartsick at another incident in which gun violence took the lives of innocent victims. And we feel the pain and fear of those in the Muslim community who worry that the actions of one man might bring down prejudice and even violence on Muslim Americans who have sought nothing but peace. It is too soon to say much. We do not know whether these murders were the work of a terrorist or a single violent individual. But we know that each life that is torn from us tears the fabric of the whole. And so we pray that we may build lives of such peace and compassion that there is mending as well.
